Black History:  Special Delivery!!

Most are familiar with the “40 acres and a Mule” promised to freed slaves. The request was made first for land only. The mule came later. The request was made during a historic meeting which took place between Union military leaders led by General Sherman and Black community leaders consisting of 20 clergy. Though Sherman did embrace the idea, it was actually suggested/requested by black the clergy leaders on January 16, 1865. Just 6 months later, 40,000 men had been settled on 40,000 acres. Later, General Sherman made provision to lend “mules” to black landowners, hence the term “40 acres and a mule”. As quickly as it began, it ended. By Fall, 1865, President Sherman reversed the order and the land was then turned back over to white land holders.
