Leontyne Price (b. 1927) as Cleopatra

Earlier today, we asked our Black Mail readers to guess the identity of the entertainer featured in this photo. If you guessed, Leontyne Price (1927 – ), you guessed right. This photo was taken when she appeared as Cleopatra in Samuel Barber’s production of Antony and Cleopatra in 1966. She is widely viewed as one of the first African Americans to receive both national and international acclaim as an opera singer. She officially retired in 1985. She is the recipient of many honors throughout her career including over a dozen grammy awards. Originally from Laurel, MS, she achieved success and at a time in history when the odds were definitely not in her favor.
