In 2022 Colin Kaepernick launched the “Autopsy Initiative” through his Know Your Rights Camp organization. The Autopsy Initiative will offer secondary autopsies at no cost to family members of anyone whose death is “police-related.” The autopsies are performed by board-certified forensic pathologists who disclose preliminary findings and a final report to families.
Kaepernick said, “The Autopsy Initiative is one important step toward ensuring that family members have access to accurate and forensically verifiable information about the cause of death of their loved one in their time of need.” The Autopsy Initiative’s focus is on addressing concerns families may have about the first autopsy’s objectivity and reliability and identifying possible manipulation of evidence, inaccurate forensic procedures, and/or potential bias of the coroner or medical examiner.
Kaepernick formerly played for the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. His last season of play was in 2016, the same year he started kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice. Kaepernick filed a collusion grievance with the NFL, saying he was blacklisted because of his protests during the national anthem at NFL games. He reached a settlement with the league in 2019.
