Black History: Special Delivery!!

In September 1955, the murderers of Emmett Till were acquitted. Till was brutally beaten and murdered for whistling at a white woman in Money, MS. His mother Mamie Till-Mobley (1921-2003) held an open casket funeral. She wanted the world to know what happened to her son.

Mamie Till-Mobley became an advocate for racial justice and continued to be active in advocating for civil rights. She died at the age of 81, in 2003.

Diane Abbott: 1st Black Woman Elected To British Parliament

Black History: Special Delivery!!

In 1987 Diane Abbott (1953 – ) became the first Black woman elected to British Parliament in the United Kingdom. Abbott is the daughter of Jamaican immigrants. Paul Boateng and Bernie Grant were also elected to Parliament with Abbott, making them the first black men to be elected to British Parliament.

Abbott was first elected to Westminster City Council in 1982. Her first parliament election bid in 1985 was unsuccessful. In the British Parliament, Abbott is known as a fiery politician who is especially outspoken on the subject of race and racism. She is a member of the left leaning Labor Political Party.

Abbott is known for her community involvement. In the 90’s she founded the organization, “Black Women Mean Business.” to support and empower black business women.  Abbott also also worked to expand educational opportunities for black children in London. Additionally, Abbott has been active in the “Scrap Sus” campaign to end police profiling of black youth during stop and search patrols.

Abbott was previously married to David Thompson from 1991-1993. They have one son, James Abbott Thompson.

Harriet Wilson: 1st African American Woman To Publish A Novel In the United States

Black History: Special Delivery!!

Harriet Adams Wilson (1825-1900)

On September 5, 1859, Harriet E. Wilson, (1825-1900) published, “Our Nig” making her the first African American woman to publish a novel in the United States. Wilson was born in Milford, New Hampshire. Her father was African American and her mother was white. When her father died, her mother abandoned her; leaving her at the home of a family where she worked as an indentured servant. She would remain with the family until the 1840’s. Wilson was married in 1851 and had a son named George. After being abandoned by her husband, she left her son in the care of foster parents and left to seek work in Boston. George died at the age of 7.

 

Wilson is said to have gone by the name, “Dr. Hattie E. Wilson” and worked as clairvoyant and psychic healer. She traveled across the U.S. making speeches on the spirit world and race relations. Wilson’s novel, “Our Nig” was a fictional story about her experience as an indentured servant, as well as her experiences with racism and prejudice. Remembering Maya Angelou & MLK

Black History:  Special Delivery!!


Today we remember the incomparable Maya Angelou.  She would have been 89 today (4/4/17).  Many don’t know that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on her  40th birthday birthday in 1968. After his assassination, she refused to celebrate her birthday.  Instead she would send flowers to King’s widow, Coretta Scott King. 

Ironically before Dr. King’s death, he had asked, Maya Angelou to travel with him and visit churches to raise money for his efforts to support the poor. Angelou agreed, but stated she could not begin until after her birthday.  A promise she would never get the chance to fulfill.  She was notified of his death while preparing for her birthday party.

Nancy Wilson (1927 – ), legendary vocalist with an iconic sound! Born in Chillicothe, OH, she began singing at age 4 sand hasn’t stopped!  On February 20, 2017, she celebrated her 80th birthday!  Check out this short video celebrating her life and legacy!
