Black History: Special Delivery!!

When people think of the 761st Tank Battalion, also known as the “Black Panthers”, they often remember that baseball player Jackie Robinson was once part of this trailblazing group. However, Robinson’s story is only one part of the battalion’s incredible legacy. Composed of nearly 800 Black soldiers, the 761st was the first African American tank battalion to see combat in World War II. Despite racism and segregation within the military, they demonstrated extraordinary bravery on the battlefield.

After rigorous training and harsh treatment in the U.S., the battalion deployed to Europe in October 1944 under General George S. Patton’s Third Army. They fought tirelessly for 183 days of continuous combat, contributing to key victories such as the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of Nazi concentration camps.

The 761st faced racism, prejudice, and under-recognition during and after their service, but their heroism helped pave the way for the desegregation of the U.S. military in 1948 and inspired future leaders in the Civil Rights Movement.

Another installment of melanated mail has been delivered. Ponder, reflect, and pass it on.
