My interpretation is that Maya Angelou it’s suggesting that how can a person genuinely love someone else without authentically knowing how to love themselves. That’s my interpretation. It’s like she is saying, why should she trust someone to love her if they don’t love themselves.

I’ve always had a hard time agreeing with this quote. Many people do not love themselves, but love others more than the world itself.
Maybe I don’t know what love is.

It is a challenging quote. One I have pondered as well I think she is challenging us to consider how we can give and receive love in healthy ways. I love quotes like this that don’t necessarily have a right answer or perspective. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
