Jassmine McBride (1988 – 2018) died on February 12, 2019, of Legionnaires disease. She contracted the lung disease due to using contaminated water in her hometown of Flint, MI. She was only 30 years of age. She was diagnosed with Legionnaires disease in 2014. The total number of Flint residents who have died from Legionnaires disease due to the Flint Water Crisis stands at 13. A total of 90 individuals have been diagnosed with the disease so far. Rue Mapp launched Outdoor Afro in 2009 via a blog and Facebook. Mapp is a former analyst with Morgan Stanley. Outdoor Afro is a labor of love and combines her passion for nature, community, and technology. The organization is focused on reigniting the connection of African Americans to nature and the outdoors.

Using social media, Mapp began writing about her fondness for nature as well as consistently being the only black person on camping and hiking excursions. Her experiences resonated with many of her social media and blog followers. Through social media she organized outdoor recreational events with the help of trained volunteer leaders. Outdoor activities included hiking, bird watching, skiing, biking, etc., for African Americans across the country. Outdoor Afro has 30 trained leaders and 7,000 active members.

Fetal Death Rate In Flint Has Risen 58% Due To Water Crisis

It’s been more than 3.5 years and Flint is still reeling from the impact of its PREVENTABLE water crisis. Research recently made available by David Sluslky (University of Kansas) and Daniel Grossman (West Virginia University) details the devastating impact the water crisis is having on Flint’s children. The research has identified a 58% increase in fetal deaths along with a 12% decrease in fertility rates.

An urban community with approximately 99,000 residents, Flint’s population is approximately 53% black, 38% white, and 6% other ethnic groups. 42% of Flint’s residents have incomes below the poverty line.

15 state employees have been indicted and may face criminal prosecution related to their involvement with the Flint water crisis.

Residents of Flint are demanding accountability! This photo was taken by a resident participating in the protest which was underway during, the State of The State address delivered by Michigan governor, Rick Snyder.

Their entire community has been impacted by the water crisis. May justice prevail on their behalf.
