Black History: Special Delivery!
Suicide rates in the Black community are rising at an alarming rate, especially among Black men and youth. On average, 15 Black Americans die by suicide every day. While the suicide rate for Black Americans is 9.2 per 100,000 people, it is rising faster than in any other racial group, particularly among Black youth and men. Black children under 13 are twice as likely to die by suicide as White children and Black men make up over 80% of suicide deaths within the Black community.
How Do These Rates Compare?
While Indigenous Americans have the highest suicide rate, Black Americans are experiencing the fastest increase. According to the CDC:
- Indigenous Americans: 26.2 per 100,000 (highest rate of any group)
- White Americans: 16.8 per 100,000 (~85 deaths per day)
- Black Americans: 9.2 per 100,000 (~15 deaths per day)
- Hispanic Americans: 7.5 per 100,000 (~16 deaths per day)
- Asian Americans: 6.8 per 100,000 (lowest per capita)
What’s Driving This Crisis?
- Economic stress, racism, and discrimination create unique mental health challenges.
- Limited access to culturally competent mental health care—only one-third of Black Americans who need help receive it.
- Persistent stigma discourages seeking support, especially among Black men, who often feel pressure to “stay strong.”
Protective Factors
Protective factors like community support, open conversations, and access to mental health care can save lives. Talking about suicide does not increase risk—it can help prevent it. If you are someone you love is struggling, call “988”, the National Suicide Lifeline 24/7/365. Help is available. You are not alone.
